Infrared spectroscopy of V 616 Monocerotis ( = A 0620 – 00 ) : the accretion disc contamination
We have obtained for the first time K-band infrared spectra of the soft X-ray transient V616 Mon (=A0620–00). We determine the 2-σ upper limit to the fraction of light arising from the accretion disc to be 27 percent. The effect this has on the binary inclination, determined from modelling the infrared ellipsoidal variations is to increase it by less than 7 degrees and decrease the mass of the ...
متن کاملMultiple ejections during the 1975 outburst of A 0620 − 00
The well-known black-hole X-ray transient A0620−00 was a bright radio source during the first part of its outburst in 1975. We have revisited the available data and find for the first time evidence that the source exhibited multiple jet ejections. Rapid radio spectral changes indicate the addition of at least three new components which are initially optically thick. From single baseline interfe...
متن کاملNon - Steady State Accretion Disks in X - Ray Novae : Outburst Models for Nova Monocerotis 1975 and Nova Muscae 1991
We fit outbursts of two X-ray novae (Nova Monocerotis 1975 = A 0620–00 and Nova Muscae 1991 = GS 1124–683) using a time-dependent accretion disk model. The model is based on a new solution for a diffusion-type equation for the non-steady-state accretion and describes the evolution of a viscous α–disk in a binary system after the peak of an outburst, when matter in the disk is totally ionized. T...
متن کاملInterferometric Observations of V838 Monocerotis
We have used long-baseline near-IR interferometry to resolve the peculiar eruptive variable V838 Mon and to provide the first direct measurement of its angular size. Assuming a uniform disk model for the emission we derive an apparent angular diameter of 1.83±0.06 milli-arcseconds. For a nominal distance of 8 ± 2 kpc, this implies a linear radius of 1570 ± 400R⊙. However, the data are somewhat ...
متن کاملV 838 Monocerotis — a Newly Discovered , Very Peculiar , Slow Nova - Like Object
The eruptive variable V838 Mon was discovered on Jan 6, 2002. Due to a subsequent phase of almost constant brightness and a spectral appearance which is unlike classical novae, speculations have been made about its nature. Either it was a very peculiar, slow nova defining a new class, an eruptive event in an evolved star as in the case of Sakurai's Object but in a much earlier phase, or somethi...
